The Data Challenge
Many companies collect and store vast amounts of client data but fail to properly manage and clean it up over time, leaving sensitive information exposed and vulnerable. In Australia, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) enforces strict regulations under the Privacy Act 1988, requiring organisations to protect personal information (PI) and ensure it is destroyed or de-identified when no longer needed. The problem is this is nearly impossible unless all your data exists in a single app and humans aren't involved in the process of collecting, storing or using it.
Despite OAIC obligations, recent major breaches and high-profile incidents have shown how data management practices don't meet today's needs and can have devastating consequence to your customers.
Millions of Australians have had their personal details compromised, exposing them to risks like identity theft and fraud. These breaches have put a spotlight on the critical importance of responsible data management and the need for businesses to not just collect data, but manage, secure, and ultimately dispose of it properly. Don't wait until it's too late, take action now for your customers.
Why it's a Challenge
Identifying sensitive or redundant data is often harder than it sounds. Over time, personal information becomes scattered across systems, backups, emails, shared drives, and old databases. Traditional tooling and services stop at the structured space, despite the majority of data now existing across unstructured sources and collaboration tools.
Without clear data mapping, ownership, and classification, companies can lose sight of what information they have, where it is stored, and why it was collected in the first place.
Legacy systems, poor documentation, staff turnover, and rapid digital growth all contribute to the problem.
How DPC Solves the Challenge:
- Discover & classify data at scale
- Associate attributes to owners - client, employee, project + more
- Identify data which is outside of it's natural lifecycle (ROT) based on the attribute owners - It's more than a credit card, it belongs to someone!
- Group data by owner
- Archive, encrypt or delete to reduce your data risk
